'It has been proved that attraction and repulsion can only be communicated to a distant body
through the medium of an intervening fluid, and that the magnetic fluid permeates all substances.'

(Evan Hopkins, 1865)

Developed from a commission for Y, a 'festival of island magnetism', Earth by Means of the Currents is the first fruit of Autumn Richardson and Richard Skelton's residency on Papa Westray, one of the most northerly islands in the Orkneys, UK. The artists spent just under a month on the island in the early spring of 2016, making field notes, images and recordings.

Earth by Means of the Currents is a series of ten original artworks collaged almost entirely from Evan Hopkins's On the Connexion of Geology with Terrestrial Magnetism, accompanied by two new recordings of voice, strings, tone generators and field recordings.

The Standard Edition reproduces each of the artworks in a hand-numbered booklet, accompanied by a download card for the music.
